Alana has started work on what is believed to be the world’s first multi-user conversational robot for healthcare.
Part of a multimillion-pound collaborative project, SPRING (Socially Pertinent Robots in Gerontological Healthcare) will develop robots with the capacity to perform multi-person interactions and social conversation at the BROCA hospital, Paris.
Robots available today are limited to a handful of scenarios. Step outside of the script or introduce another person to the conversation and the robot doesn’t work. Alana is different.
Operating as part of a robot that has multiple modes of sensing the world, including sight, Alana will handle multi-person conversations with patients, carers, hospital staff and companions. This type of technology is touch-free and hands-free, perfectly suited to reducing the risk and spread of infection.
Through the project, Alana will offer robust perception in complex, unstructured and highly populated environments, to speak with more than one person and to intake information from multiple sensory modes.
Alana is helping to create a brand new generation of robots that are flexible enough to adapt to the needs of users, and not the other way around.
